Downloading and Decompressing Software
The Mac software is compressed, and must be decompressed using Stuffit. Installation instructions are included in the technical users' manual. The Windows software is compressed as well, and must be decompressed using Winzip, PKUnzip,or a similar utility.
Downloading the Entire Web Site:
This web site contains graphics and movies which are large and slow to load, especially over telephone modems. In addition, few schools have fast or multiple terminal internet access. Therefore, it is very effective for schools with networked labs, either PC or Mac, to download the entire site and view from offline networked terminals in the lab. There are a number of software programs which do this. In the author's opinion, the best programs are WebWhacker by the ForeFront, and NetAttache Light by Tympani Development.
Webwhacker is available in a free limited function demo version, or in a fully functional version for $49. It is available in Windows or Mac format. Only WebWhacker 1.0 saves files in HTML format, allowing them to be viewed on a computer which does not have WebWhacker loaded. Version 3.0 requires WebWhacker to be loaded on all computers.
NetAttache Light is a free program for educational or personal use. It is available for Windows only. Downloaded files can be easily transferred to other computers and viewed with a browser (Netscape, MS Explorer, Mosaic) without NetAttache being loaded on all computers.
Finally, to make using this site as easy as possible, The entire site has been compressed into a self-extracting execution file (.exe). This file is large, but contains everything necessary to view the World Wide Web site offline. Click the link below to download the file, store the file in its own directory on your hard drive, or on the server at your school, and run the file to extract the html and graphic files. With a browser, open index.html, and proceed from there.
