Photos of the D-Zero Detector at Fermilab

One of the two detectors for colliding particles at Fermilab is located at the point on the accelerator ring called D0, so is called D-Zero.

The original DO was finished in ___, but it has been upgraded to give better identification of particles. The upgrade added a better inner tracker and magnet. Usually, you cannot see any of the detector except the muon detector and the surrounding concrete blocks, but these photos show it when it was partially dismantled.

Notice the beam pipe in the center of the photo. When the upgrading was finished, the detector was moved back into place, and the beam pipe was connected to the rest of the accelerator beam pipe.

This shows the 3 main layers of detectors. Notice the size of the people.

This is one section of the fibers in the "central fiber tracker". The closely placed fibers record the time and place as particles pass through; they "track" the particles.

This shows the end part of the calorimeter. Like a calorimeter in chemistry, this one also measures energy of the particles.

This shows the solenoid (magnet) before it is inserted between the tracker and calorimeter.
