We can see galaxies moving away from us, and their redshifts tell us how fast they are moving. But to know the amount of time they have been moving, and thus the age of the universe, we need to know how far away they are. We need a meterstick to measure the cosmos. One such meterstick is a group of unusual stars, called cepheid variable stars.
