Motion and Forces

2-liter coke bottles and caps, chopsticks
November 20 Impulse and Momentum 1. Rocket modification.
2. Water Tower.
3. Swinging Dart.
4. Low friction CD.
Your rocket and launcher (if you were there last time), 2-liter coke bottles and caps, old CDs, push-up cap from liquid soap, and any improvements that you've made.
January 8, 2000 Waves and Sound 1. Doppler Ball.
2. Palm Pipes.
3. Wave-motor on a string.
4. Traveling wave for overhead projector.
5. Space Phones
Bring questions about waves and sound.
February 26 Optics and Color 1. Light Box. Make from large round cardboard ice cream box and clear long light bulb.
2. Spectroscope (2). From STAR (info here later) or Stanford Solar or Paul Mortfield. Look at street lights, reflections,(NOT directly at the sun), etc.
3. Color filters
4. Kaleidoscope:
Drill or punch a 1/4 inch hole in the end of one black film container.
Cut the end off of another one.
Tape them together with black electricial tape, so that you have a longer tube - open on one end and a hole in the other.
Lay 3 microscope slides side by side. Lay a strip of cellophane tape over the edges of each two.
Tape and form a long triangle with them.
Insert into the tubes.

Purchased Items:
1. Box of optics from Edmunds Scientific, $20.
2. Cheap mirrors and lenses can be bought from American Science and Surplus.
3. Diffraction grating (holographic) from STAR. Keep it in a baggy so that it doesn't get fingerprints on it.

An empty round cardboard box from ice cream store, old CDs, something in every day life that acts like a mirror (like a spoon, but be more creative!), something that acts like a lens, empty film canisters, and a bag to carry everything.
March 25 Electric Circuits Make-and-Take:
1. Simple circuits with Xmas lights.
2. Analogy boards.
3. Simple motor.

Purchased items:
1. Several multimeters ($6.99) from Harbor Freight Tools.
2. Small motors (3 for $2.25) and battery holders (American Science and Surplus), resistors, batteries, etc.

Bring a demo or lab or idea to SHARE!

Bring an old, broken, small appliance (electric clock, hair dryer, etc.) to dissect.

April 7 The Charm of Strange Quarks

Purchased items:
1. Particle Chart placemat from CPEP.
2. Particle Adventure CDs from Andria Erzberger at LBNL.
